Periodontal Treatments

Healthy gums add the perfect accent to your smile’s appearance. They also help prevent cavities and keep the teeth properly aligned. Moreover, they provide the first line of defense between your body and the oral bacteria that can contribute to the risk of a stroke, heart attack, colon cancer, arthritis and diabetes. There is even evidence linking gum problems to Alzheimer’s disease and an increased risk of contracting COVID-19. Our dentist and team offer periodontal treatments in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, to help you maintain a healthy smile AND body. Periodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease and related conditions. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an oral condition affecting the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. It occurs when the harmful bacteria in plaque irritate and inflame the gum tissues, causing an infection. If not treated properly, it can eventually lead to gum recession, bone loss and tooth loss as well as many systemic conditions.

In the early stages of the disease, gum disease is referred to as gingivitis. Gingivitis is characterized by redness, tenderness and swelling of the gums. If treated in this early stage, gum disease can often be brought under control or even eliminated. If untreated, it can develop into a more severe stage of the disease, known as periodontitis, which can cause significant damage to the bones supporting the teeth and requires more frequent and involved treatment to manage.

Periodontics includes a number of treatments designed to fight gum disease and improve your oral health. It also includes the placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth. We have developed a state-of-the-art treatment regimen designed to combat the periodontal disease. This regimen includes:

  • Scaling and root planing

  • Laser pocket therapy

  • Electric toothbrushes

  • Water flossing

  • CloSYS toothpaste and rinses

  • Follow-up visits

When you visit our office, our dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth to determine which treatment or combination of treatments is right for your needs.
